projects to improve the dormitories and contribute to climate protection
Let’s begin with a short inventory
When we talk about projects, we have to say that of course they have different dimensions. Sometimes just one dormitory is involved. Sometimes we take measures in all 15 dormitories. That’s why we want to give you some short information so that you can estimate the dimensions of the various projects.
home4students currently takes care of:
15 dormitories (in Vienna, Graz, Klagenfurt, Salzburg and Innsbruck)
1.987 residents
144 kitchen
1071 bathrooms
4754 rooms
1 construction site in Klagenfurt
Ok, so much for that. Now more information about our projects
The following projects are being permanently implemented until the entire process is completed in all dormitories:
- Alternative lighting (all dormitories, 4754 rooms):
To reduce electricity costs we plan to change lighting in all dormitories to energy saving lamps or LED lamps. That’s to be considered as a large-scale project, since we have to change not only the bulbs but the whole lighting systems due to the age of the houses. That’s why implementation is planned to take about two years. - Equipment of all water taps with aerators (all dormitories, 144 kitchen and 1071 bathrooms):
Aerators can reduce water consumption about 40%. This measure may not seem big for one dormitory, but just in Vienna a major part of our budget is used fort that. That’s why this effort also lasts for about two years. - Reparation and renewal of heating systems and heating valves (all dormitories):
We start to change the valves to get a better handling of the heating systems. Besides that thermostatic valves will be installed so that you can control the temperature in your rooms yourself. The period of implementation is also two years. - Maintaining of windows (first Vienna, afterwards other cities):
This year we plan to maintain all windows in Vienna and change several seals/gaskets. This measure is aimed at reducing loss of heat and saving energy.
In all other cities these measures are currently not necessary (with a few exceptions). However, it is planned for the future, since maintaining will become necessary at some point. - Dormitory Nautilusweg 11, Klagenfurt:
Currently we expand our dormitory in Klagenfurt, Nautilusweg by 114 single room-places.
Our new building was planned following climate friendly standards and is supposed to bring advantages in the following ways:
- The building envelope is designed in such a manner that summerly overheating and thermal bridges are avoided. That way the inside temperature always stays convenient.
- Great care was taken to choose the building materials and plan all details of the construction in order to ensure thermal quality and a reduced heating demand. According to the energy performance certificate we have reached level A! (Levels A-G).
- We will have controlled ventilation all living rooms: the new buildings will be supplied with preheated external air that enters through an energy recovery ventilation. Approximately 400 meter of piping were installed two meter underground with a diameter ranging from 200mm to 800mm. Our system has hardly any convective heat loss. Your advantage: you have always fresh air without thinking about the outside temperature.
- The dormitory is connected to district heating. That measure saves a considerable amount of CO2-emission.
- Motion detectors for lamps will be installed where it makes sense. That’s convenient and saves energy.
All rooms in the existing dormitory will be adapted in the course of the project.
In 2009 we have already achieved:
- These areas where completed in at least one of our dormitories:
- Equipment of water-taps with aerators for better use of water
- Reparation of all running toilets
- Change of normal lamps to energy saving lamps
- Change of Room windows for better insulation - Heating systems in all dormitories:
The heating systems in all dormitories were completely cleaned and maintained by our staff. Valves were changed in order to prepare all radiators perfectly for the winter time. It makes the dormitories more convenient for you and optimizes stability and efficiency of the systems.
