Money is usually tight during college, your course load often leaves little time for more than a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.home4students.at\/en\/?p=38350\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.home4students.at\/en\/?p=38350\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">part-time job<\/a>, and living expenses and costs related to your studies can really add up. Family allowance is a monthly financial benefit for us students. But how do you qualify for this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.home4students.at\/en\/straight-to-student-aid\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.home4students.at\/en\/straight-to-student-aid\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">financial aid<\/a> to help fund your studies? How much can you expect to receive? And how long are you actually eligible? We have summarized everything for you, so you don&#8217;t have to wade through the maze of regulations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How much is the family allowance for students?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>First things first: Let&#8217;s talk money! Until you turn 19, your parents are entitled to 171,80\u20ac per month in Austria. Once you turn 19, the family allowance for students is increased once more, and they are entitled to 200,40\u20ac per month (as of 2026).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have siblings, there&#8217;s a small bonus on top of that (as of 2026):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>2 children: + 8,60\u20ac per child<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>3 children: + 21,10\u20ac per child<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>4 children: + 32,10\u20ac per child<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>5 children: + 38,90\u20ac per child<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>6 children: + 43,40\u20ac per child<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>7 children: + 63,10\u20ac per child<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"724\" height=\"483\" src=\"https:\/\/www.home4students.at\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/geld-studium.jpg\" alt=\"Geldm\u00fcnzen und Sponsionshut\" class=\"wp-image-23148\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.home4students.at\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/geld-studium.jpg 724w, https:\/\/www.home4students.at\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/geld-studium-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.home4students.at\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/geld-studium-100x67.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 724px) 100vw, 724px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who is eligible for family allowance?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The conditions for receiving this governmental benefit depend on your stage of life. We&#8217;ll explain what this means for the period before you start college and when students can also receive family allowance. You don&#8217;t need to submit a separate application for family allowance. In Austria, the benefit is automatically granted to parents based on the Central Population Register.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Family allowance before you start university<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Until your 18th birthday, your parents receive a monthly allowance for you without any conditions. If you haven&#8217;t started your studies yet, you will receive money if:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>you are currently in professional training<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>you have finished school and are waiting for the earliest possible start of further professional training (apprenticeship, university, university of applied sciences)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>you have completed your military or civilian service and are waiting to start or continnue your professional training.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Family allowance for students<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Have you decided to pursue a degree? Then you are eligible to receive family allowance until your 24th birthday, provided the following conditions are met:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>proof of academic progress showing the completion<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>of at least 16 ECTS credits in the first year of study<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>or at least 14 ECTS credits during the introductory and orientation phase (STEOP)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>2. the minimum duration of study and extra semesters are not exceeded:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>for programs with study sections, there is one extra semester per section<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>for programs without study sections, there are two extra semesters<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>3. the program has been reported as continued<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Special Cases and Extension of Eligibility<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In certain special cases, the eligibility period may be extended until your 25th birthday. This applies, for example, if you are performing military, professional training, or alternative civilian service; if you are pregnant or have given birth; if you have a significant disability; or if you are engaged in volunteer work for a period of eight to twelve months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You may also be eligible for an additional extra semester without losing your family allowance for students if your graduation is delayed due to an unforeseen event, illness, or study abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Heads up when changing your major! To remain eligible for the grant, you may change your major no more than two times. The changes must occur no later than before the third semester of enrollment. To ensure the money goes straight into your bank account without any delays, all you need is a simple form from the tax office: the person entitled to the child support (usually your mother or father) must sign to authorize the direct payment to you. The only condition: you must be of legal age. If your circumstances change, this decision can be revoked at any time by sending an informal letter to the tax office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">More financing options for your studies<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The little financial boost from family allowance is definitely a help for students. But does money still run short every month due to living expenses?
