{"id":6924,"date":"2021-03-02T14:31:07","date_gmt":"2021-03-02T13:31:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.home4students.at\/?p=6924"},"modified":"2021-03-02T14:31:08","modified_gmt":"2021-03-02T13:31:08","slug":"how-to-finance-your-studies-in-austria","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.home4students.at\/en\/how-to-finance-your-studies-in-austria\/","title":{"rendered":"How to finance your studies in Austria"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Financing your studies: perhaps not the most fascinating topic to dedicate your time to, but nonetheless necessary. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Here are the main ways to finance your studies in Austria:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">a) Get a job on the side<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>From waitressing to basic office jobs- there is a plethora of jobs available to students alongside their studies. In Austria, around 51.5% have a job during the semester. A few hours a week can not only help make ends meet but can also be the ideal opportunity to gain some practical experience and CV-material for later in life. Personally, I\u2019ve worked at sports events, bars and with children. There really is something for everyone! The \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/jobs.oehweb.at\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u00d6H Jobb\u00f6rse<\/a>\u201d is the perfect place to start looking for such a job: new opportunities are posted every day!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><strong>Be careful<\/strong>: If you are also getting study grants from the State, you can earn up to \u20ac 10.000 a year on the side. If you earn more than this, you have to pay back part of the study grant. Also, watch out for taxes- anything above \u20ac 11.000 per year is subject to income tax.<br><br><strong>Tip 1<\/strong><br>Use the career services that your university provides: the career portals offer jobs in the university as well as other jobs. But always make sure that you balance your working hours with your studies!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tip 2<\/strong><br>Write job applications out of your own initiative i.e. don\u2019t wait for companies to advertise a job. Sometimes it\u2019s worth just sending your CV and cover letter to a company \u2013 you never know what will happen! This is especially good if you\u2019re looking for a job in a particular sector or company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1230\" height=\"639\" src=\"https:\/\/www.home4students.at\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Locations_Rec.jpg\" alt=\"Notebook steht am Schreibtisch und eine Bewohnerin sitzt davor\" class=\"wp-image-837\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">b) Grants and Scholarships<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Grants and scholarships in Austria can be roughly divided into four main categories:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Merit-based scholarships<\/li><li>Grants from the State: for example, <em>specific grant for low-income<\/em> households: to qualify you must have Austrian citizenship (or equivalent); other grants such as <em>grants for those who have worked at least four years<\/em> before studying <\/li><li>Grants for those struggling to make ends meet near the end of their studies<\/li><li>Scholarships from private companies<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>For international students, it\u2019s important to look at the criteria carefully to see if you are eligible. More scholarships and grants can also be found in combination with the Erasmus+ program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>My tip:<\/strong> on the search for a grant or scholarship? A great place to start you search is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.grants.at\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">www.grants.at<\/a> where you can also find plenty of international opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">c) Student Loan<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore, there is always the option of a student loan. In Austria, different banks offer different loans &#8211; there is no standardised agency like in the UK. Student loans are paid monthly and have a lower interest rate than conventional loans. It\u2019s a good idea to look around for the best deal and not take the first offer you get.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">d) Social Funds from the \u00d6H (Austrian Students\u2019 Union)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you suddenly find yourself in a precarious financial situation the social funds from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oeh.ac.at\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Austrian Students\u2019 Union<\/a> may be able to help. To be eligible you must be an Austrian citizen (or equivalent by law) living away from home and not be receiving grants from the State.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">My Tips and Tricks<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/embed\/SsNRdueeih1mQCYWV5\" width=\"480\" height=\"270\" frameBorder=\"0\" class=\"giphy-embed\" allowFullScreen><\/iframe><p><a href=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/gifs\/latewithlilly-lilly-singh-a-little-late-with-SsNRdueeih1mQCYWV5\">via GIPHY<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Personally, I finance my studies with the support of my parents and a selection of different jobs on the side. At the moment, I am doing online tutoring. In my summer holidays, I normally work as a waitress or bartender, like most students (the tips here are amazing!) and have also done small one-off jobs whilst studying. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A little tip:<\/strong> for tutoring or babysitting jobs, a quick Google search will deliver lots of results! For new students I strongly recommend organising your money into a weekly budget and keeping track of weekly spending.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><strong><em>Where to live<\/em><\/strong><br>Exorbitant rents can be a big problem for students. Living in a student dorm, for example the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.home4students.at\/en\/our-dormitories\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">home4students dorms<\/a>, is the perfect way to save a bit of money and meet lots of cool people from all around the world along the way! I myself have lived in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.home4students.at\/en\/our-dormitories\/dormitories-innsbruck\/dormitory-hoettinger-au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">home4students H\u00f6ttinger Au<\/a> in Innsbruck, and currently live in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.home4students.at\/en\/our-dormitories\/dormitories-innsbruck\/dormitory-technikerstrasse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">home4students Technikerstra\u03b2e<\/a> (also in Innsbruck). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The diversity and uplifting, family-like atmosphere that can be felt in the kitchens and shared spaces is what has prevented me from moving out &#8211; I simply can\u2019t get enough! And now I really do have friends all around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><strong><em>Transport<\/em><\/strong><br>For long distance journeys in Austria, it\u2019s more than worth getting the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oebb.at\/en\/tickets-kundenkarten\/kundenkarten\/vorteilscard\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u00d6BB Jugendvorteilskarte<\/a>\u201d (a discount card for under 26-year-olds) which gets you 50% off all railway journeys. For inner city travel there are often discounts for students. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, in Innsbruck you can get the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vvt.at\/page.cfm?vpath=tickets&amp;switchLocale=en_US\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Semesterticket<\/a>\u201d (a card that lets you travel all around Innsbruck or the whole of Tirol for one semester). Carsharing is also perfect for long journeys, for example <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blablacar.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">www.blablacar.com<\/a> is a website I like to use a lot when travelling home or to a place that is hard to reach.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Books<\/em><\/strong><br>Books can be expensive, especially in certain degrees like medicine or law. To save a bit of money it\u2019s a good idea to look online for second-hand books (for example on sites like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.willhaben.at\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">www.willhaben.at<\/a>). In some faculties they offer a second-hand book service at university.
